Cologne. April 7th is World Health Day – a day that reminds the world of the value of health. But this idea doesn’t end with humans. Our pets also benefit enormously if we identify health risks early and prevent them. This is exactly where Fit&Fell, ZooRoyal's content series, comes in: “We make veterinary expertise suitable for everyday use, understandable, approachable and directly implementable. Because prevention starts on a small scale with routines, good observation and the right diet.”
Why prevention for animals is so crucial
Prevention is an important but highly underestimated area of veterinary medicine. Many illnesses can be detected early or even prevented if owners establish regular health routines. Just a few minutes a week can make a difference.
Veterinarian Sebastian Goßmann-Jonigkeit also advises:
Many health problems appear gradually, especially in cats and dogs: kidney diseases, joint problems, obesity or dental problems often only show clear symptoms late. Regular mini-checks and adjusted feeding can make a big difference here. (Sebastian Goßmann-Jonigkeit, veterinarian)
Six everyday tips for healthy pet years

- Weigh weekly – detect changes early
Body weight is one of the most reliable early indicators of health changes. Use the body condition score to assess whether your animal is in a comfortable range. With smart automatic feeders, portioning is particularly easy. - Pay attention to functional nutrition
Nutrition is the basis for a long, healthy life. Look for functional nutrients like EPA/DHA, antioxidants, pro/pre/postbiotics and high-quality proteins. Depending on the phase of life, a phosphorus-reduced formula can be useful for cats to relieve the strain on the kidneys. - Promote hydration – especially in cats
Lots of animals (especially cats) naturally drink too little. This increases the risk of kidney and urinary tract problems. Drinking fountains or several water bowls in the apartment can work wonders. Bonus: Running water is a real drinking motivator for many cats. - Care for teeth and support joints
A regular dental care routine prevents pain and inflammation. The joints also benefit from simple adjustments: an orthopedic bed, small ramps or non-slip pads can improve quality of life, especially in old age. - Test early, act early
The earlier a problem is noticed, the better it can be treated. Home urine tests are an easy way to detect kidney and urinary tract problems early. If there are any abnormalities, your diet should always be checked; it is often a central key to improvement. - Keep body and mind active
Movement is medicine! Intelligence toys, dummy training, interactive games or activity trackers help keep your body and mind fit. Regular activity reduces stress, strengthens bonds and keeps body weight stable.
World Health Day as an opportunity for a new routine
World Health Day is the ideal occasion to start a small but effective health routine:
- Weighing once per week,
- an additional water bowl,
- five minute dental check.
Even these small steps contribute to a healthier animal life in the long term and, above all, in a timely manner.
