September 13th: A celebration of friendship between humans and dogs
Boppard. Hug Your Dog Day invites dog owners around the world to consciously celebrate the special bond they have with their four-legged friend. This day of action was originally created in the USA under the name 'Hug Your Hound Day' to honor the emotional closeness between humans and dogs and at the same time draw attention to the well-being of animals.
The focus is not only on the loving gesture of a hug, but also on remembering how important affection, respect and species-appropriate behavior are for a dog's happiness. For many owners, this day is a welcome opportunity to slow down everyday life, enjoy moments together and deepen the relationship. It's not just about physical closeness – the hug rather symbolizes trust, security and gratitude. Dog owners often use the day to go on special trips with their animals, try out new games or simply sit quietly together. This makes “Hug Your Dog” Day a small but meaningful ritual that celebrates the friendship between humans and dogs while reminding us of how valuable this connection is.
The day goes back to the American dog trainer, animal psychologist and author Ami Moore from Chicago. She launched National Hug Your Hound Day in 1999 to raise public awareness of the special connection between humans and dogs. Their goal was not only to celebrate affection, but also to make the USA more dog-friendly as a whole – following the European model, where dogs are more easily allowed on public transport, restaurants or shops in many places.
The day of action takes place every year on the second Sunday in September – this year on Sunday, September 13th. In addition to the symbolic gesture of a hug, it is also intended to remind people of how important respect, species-appropriate behavior and social acceptance are for dogs.
Ideas for a special day with your four-legged friend
For many owners, this day is a welcome opportunity to slow down everyday life and deepen their relationship with their dog. It's not just about the gesture of hugging, but about consciously experiencing trust, security and gratitude. What is crucial is that the dog enjoys being close and the day becomes a positive experience for both of them.
- Conscious cuddle time: gentle stroking or a relaxed hug if the dog likes it.
- Include favorite activity: a trip to your favorite place, whether forest, beach or park.
- Try new games: Intelligence games, sniffing mats or small search tasks stimulate the mind and are fun.
- Bake your own treats: Healthy dog biscuits made from ingredients such as oat flakes, carrots or peanut butter are quick to make and a real token of love (Recipe: make your own dog biscuits).
- Photoshoot: Capture the special moment. A picture together can be a nice memory later.
- Wellness: Gentle grooming or massage can have a relaxing effect and strengthen the bond.
Tip: Always pay attention to the dog's body language. A hug should be comfortable for him – wagging tail, relaxed ears and soft gaze are good signs. (SR)
