After the death of their human or a departure to an EHPAD, these dogs still hope to find a family

La Petite Tribu is an animal protection association, located in Montlignon (95). Among his protégés, many of them saw their lives turned upside down after the death of their favorite human or their departure into a nursing home. In the absence of a placement solution, particularly with loved ones, these furballs find themselves without a home overnight. With the help of volunteers, they hope to make a new start in a loving family, who will be able to make a lasting commitment. This is the case of Sissy, a 12-year-old dog, or of Punch and Pépite, 7-year-old Pekingese.

“ Adopting an animal also means thinking about what will happen if we can no longer take care of it, explain The Little Tribe to our editorial staff, what happens if you are hospitalized? Entry into an EHPAD? Loss of autonomy? Of death? Who can take over? Who will welcome him? Who will cover the care and costs? »

During an exchange with Woopetsthe association based in Île-de-France confided having to collect hairballs “ whose abandonments could have been avoided ” And ” whose life changes when their human gets old, is hospitalized or has to enter an EHPAD “.

An elderly dog who finds herself back at square one after the death of her human

Sissyfor example, is a 12-year-old dog who had to face the greatest ordeal of her life: the disappearance of her human. “ After this death, she found herself without a solution and had to be taken care of, underlines our interlocutor, At this age, finding a family is obviously more complicated. »

And yet… Sissy is a wonderful companion, who knows family life and will make her adopters happy. In addition to being affectionate and enjoying the company of humans, she has acquired myriad little habits over the years.

2 other hearts on legs join The Little Tribebecause their manager must enter EHPAD. The Beijing girls, aged 7, “ will therefore have to leave their home, their habits and the person with whom they shared their life “.

Like many other pets, Punch And Nugget are not accepted in this type of establishment dedicated to our seniors. And if their owners' loved ones refuse to take them in, these furballs find themselves alone overnight.

Why do associations sometimes refuse adoptions to elderly people?

This is a criticism you may have heard before. Several animal protection associations choose to refuse the adoption of a resident to a senior citizen. This is the case, for example, of puppies and kittens, which can live 15 to 20 years. What does our interlocutor think?

“ At La Petite Tribu, we know very well the importance of the presence of an animal in the life of an elderly person, particularly in the face of isolation and loneliness. It is precisely for this reason that these decisions are often taken with death in the soul, she declares, our role is also to think about the animal in the years to come. When we consider adoption from an elderly person, we ask for a real commitment from the children or grandchildren: who will take care of the animal if its human has to be hospitalized, enter a nursing home or can no longer care for it? »

In addition to anticipating, The Little Tribe evokes an interesting formula, which can reduce abandonments: long-term foster care. “ The elderly person can welcome and live daily with the animal, benefit from this presence and build a real relationship with it, while knowing that the association remains responsible for the animal and that a solution can be organized if its situation changes. », she concludes.
