Boppard. Winter brings with it some challenges for our dogs. In general, well-groomed fur protects your four-legged friend better from cold and wet conditions. Walks should also be kept shorter in very cold weather. But cold, snow and ice can be stressful for dogs, especially certain breeds. The question is a dog coat useful?
Why do some dogs need a winter coat?
- Short fur and lack of undercoat: Breeds such as Dalmatians, Dobermans or Whippets often have short fur without a thick undercoat. This means they freeze faster.
- Joint problems: Older dogs or animals with joint diseases may experience increased pain due to cold. A coat can provide additional protection here.
- Small dogs: Small dogs have a relatively large body surface area to body weight ratio. This means they cool down faster.
- Puppies and seniors: Puppies do not yet have fully developed fur and seniors have difficulty regulating their body temperature.
When is a dog coat useful?
- In very cold weather: A coat can be particularly useful when temperatures are below freezing.
- In wet and windy conditions: Wetness and wind cool the body quickly.
- On long walks: A coat can provide additional protection for long walks in cold environments.
- For dogs with health problems: Dogs with heart problems or other illnesses that affect heat regulation should be given special protection.
What are the benefits of a dog coat?
- Thermal protection: The coat protects the dog from cold and wind.
- Protection against moisture: Many coats are water-repellent and protect against snow and rain.
- Protection against injuries: Some coats have reflectors and thus protect against injuries in traffic.
Which products are recommended?
- Fit: The coat should fit well, but not constrict.
- Material: Look for breathable and water-repellent materials.
- Practical details: Reflectors, a collar hole and a leash opening are useful.
- Season: There are special winter coats with additional insulation.
A dog coat can be a useful addition to the outfit for many dogs. It offers protection from cold, wet and injuries. Whether the dog needs a coat depends on various factors, such as breed, age and health status. (Stefan Richter)
