Attention dog owners: Do not underestimate the risk of ticks, even in the city!

Ingelheim. A recent study from 2022 examined the distribution of ticks in Berlin in detail and provided important insights for dog owners in urban areas. Contrary to the popular belief that ticks are mainly found in rural areas, the study shows that there is also a significant risk of tick bites and the associated diseases in urban areas such as Berlin.

Researchers have identified a total of twelve different tick species in 237 locations in Berlin, including species that are usually found in warmer climates. Some of these tick species, such as the pigeon tick, which is still relatively unknown in our latitudes, are able to develop and reproduce in heated rooms, which means they can be present all year round.

Many dog owners assume that the risk of tick infestation is lower in the city. However, the study clearly shows that ticks are widespread in cities like Berlin and thus underlines the need to protect dogs from ticks regularly and all year round, even in urban environments. This includes the use of tick repellents and regular checking of the animals after each walk.
