Four paws warn: Pets do not unattended in front of shops

Hamburg. Only once in the supermarket and the beloved four -legged friend in front of the shop, it can suddenly go very quickly and the animal is stolen. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case. The international animal protection organization Four paws calls on dog owners to take certain precautions in everyday life so that their dog does not become victims of theft.

Everywhere dogs can be observed that are waiting for their person's return in front of shops – unfortunately this is doomed to some four -legged friends. “Every pet owner and animal owner must be aware that dog theft can go extremely quickly. Only once tied the dog alone once, and when you come back, it is gone. A microchip does not protect against theft, but responsible pet owners should have their dogs implanted a microchip and register their animal in a database. In the best case, this can help to find the animal, ”says four paws pet expert Dr. Judith Förster.

So you can prevent pet theft in the best possible way
So that dog theft does not even occur, dogs should never be unattended. In particular, trusting and smaller animals can be kidnapped quickly. Do not leave your animal outside the apartment or house alone – especially if the property is not sufficiently secured before access by strangers. And even in the car alone, dogs are quickly at the mercy of a thief.

“Do not be fooled by supposedly theft -proof linen made of flexible, cutting steel or linen with a lock. If criminals want to steal a dog, they will do this. If in doubt, by removing the collar, ”warns the four paws expert. Instead, it makes sense to train the dog so that it can stay alone for some time. However, dogs should not be left alone for more than four hours.

If you suspect dog theft: Don't wait!
“For outsiders, dog theft is often not so easy to recognize. It is not automatically the case that dogs bark or refuse to follow them with a stranger. Sometimes it looks like the supposed woman or master simply turns on your animal, even though this is actually theft, ”said Dr. Judith Förster.

If the assumption is still obvious that the dog has actually been stolen, it is important to act immediately. In this case, you should immediately turn on the police and ask passers -by whether they saw something. In the next step, local animal shelters and surrounding veterinary clinics should be contacted. A profile with photo and description of the animal can also support the search. “If the animal is registered in a nationwide database, you can also publish a missing person report on the associated website. Volunteers who live in the area where the dog was stolen also keep their eyes open to the animal, ”explains Dr. Ranger.
