Brood and setting time: fun with the dog despite a leash

From April to July, special protection applies to wild animals
PETA gives people with dogs tips on dealing with natural walks

Stuttgart. Spring is there and as every year the so-called breeding and setting time begins in early April. Local wild animals such as foxes, rabbits, wild boars and deer gave birth to their children primarily in the months between March and July. Dogs should be leased during this time to protect the animals, because it can happen that they incite young animals or frighten breeding birds. The encounter with wild animals is also not harmless to dogs at the time, because animal mothers like the wild boars are vehemently defending their children. Several federal states have already decided on a leash for dogs – in Berlin and Brandenburg's forests, among other things, the obligation to secure dogs with a leash applies all year round (1). In Hamburg, dogs have to be leased outside of their own property all year round. Exception: Designed dog swaying areas (2.3). Despite selective state law regulations, there is no nationwide regulation. Jana Hoger, specialist for animal roommates at PETA, therefore appeals to all people with dogs to secure her four -legged friends through a leash during walks in natural areas and gives tips on how the running round is fun despite restriction.

“People who hold dogs have to ensure when walks in nature that peaceful and undisturbed breeding and setting time can take place,” said Jana Hoger. “The animals should basically stay on forest paths all year round and be secured in the months between March and July for safety by a well -fitting dishes and a leash. There are great opportunities for boredom on the walks to employ dogs and to load them physically and mentally.”

PETA has put together some tips on animal -friendly employment:

  • Sniff walk: The intensive sniffing, also known as “read newspaper”, is a need for dogs. The pronounced sense of smell serves to process information and communicate with fellow species. So people should give the four -legged friends enough time while walking. This ensures fun and balance despite a leash.
  • Check of the treat: For dogs, nose work is a demanding and beautiful form of occupancy. In order to prevent boredom, for example, several small rations can be hidden on the walk, which then sniff the four -legged friends. Due to the sense of achievement, the dogs are also positively rewarded.
  • City tour: The breeding and setting time can also be used for city training. In the long run, an extensive walk in nature is of course not replaceable with a trip to the city. It offers dogs new input and a lot of things that are to be sniffed. It should be ensured that the animals feel comfortable in the city. Excursions to the city are not recommended for fear or stress-prone four-legged friends. The training must always be adapted to the dog.
  • Playdate: With so -called playdates on fenced freewheel areas or in the garden, dogs can let off steam with their fellow species and have fun. Hide-and-seek or flexibility games are also suitable means to keep the animals in motion during the sociable meeting.
  • Indoor employment: Dogs can also be busy and mentally busy within your own four walls. “Sniffing carpets” or search games in the apartment are well suited for intensive training.

Extra tip: If a dog finds a wildlife baby, it should not be touched or taken away, but a wildlife station can be contacted as quickly as possible. People should only help immediately if a wildlife child is near the mother or on a busy street.
