Cooling for dog & Co. instead of heat stroke

This is how they help dog, cat and little ones safely petition through the hot days

Eschborn. Summer is there – and to the fullest. But the high temperatures can quickly become a burden – not only for us humans, but especially for our pets. For them, heat means pure stress – with sometimes life -threatening consequences. In order for dogs, cats and small pets to survive the hot time unscathed, they are particularly dependent on the care of their bipeds. The animal welfare organization Tasso, which operates Europe's largest free pet register, therefore gives animal owners important tips on how to protect their animal from the dangers of the heat and ensure cooling.

The effects of the heat for our animal companions should never be underestimated. In contrast to us humans, dogs and cats as well as small pets such as rabbits and guinea pigs can hardly sweat, more precisely not at all, they have to regulate their body temperature via other mechanisms. In the worst case, strong heat load can lead to heat stroke, in which vital organs can fail and the animal comes into a life -threatening situation within a short time. But also temperatures that still seem pleasant for us humans can be dangerous for the four -legged friends. Basically, it is important that the animals are not exposed to excessive exertion in the warm summer months and always have access to fresh drinking water, cool retreats and shadow spaces.

Take up a little more calmly with dog
Dog in the shadeExtensive walks or training sessions should be moved to the cooler morning and evening hours. It is advisable to use forest and meadow paths, because paved soils can quickly heat up in the sun and burn the dog's paws. On the other hand, pet owners should definitely refrain from bike tours in the summer months. For dogs, temperatures from 15 degrees Celsius can become life -threatening in connection with excessive stress. Many dogs are also happy to cool off in the stream or river. Dog owners should always keep an eye on their four -legged friends and pay attention to any currents. Caution should be exercised in the case of standing waters. At high temperatures, bacteria such as cyanobacteria can quickly form there, which are a great health risk for the four -legged friend. Long -haired dogs and dogs with a lot of undercoat can be supported by regular fur care and brushes. Absolute taboo: An animal should never be left in the hot car. Already a few minutes from 20 degrees Celsius outside temperature are enough to transform the inside of the car into a fatal oven.

Cats are happy about cool retreats
Cats like it warm and comfortable, which is why they usually feel very comfortable in the summer months. But extreme heat also troubles them. It is important that you always have access to shady places and cool retreats that you can switch to yourself. Pure apartment cats are often happy about special cooling mats or moist towels that you can visit when you want to cool off. In long -haired cats, animal owners can remove undercoat by regular brushes of the fur and thus also cool down. Even if some cats drink a little less in summer, they always have to be offered enough fresh drinking water. Cats predominantly prefer large water surfaces and like their people distribute larger bowls in the apartment or in the garden. Beware of tilting window: Again and again there are life -threatening injuries when cats try to climb through the window gap. Cat holders should therefore completely avoid putting windows on a tilting or providing special protective devices.

Small pets are particularly sensitive to heat
Temperatures from 25 degrees Celsius can already be dangerous for guinea pigs and rabbits. In order to create a little cooling in your own four walls, it makes sense to ventilate in the morning and in the evening and keep the rooms cool with downloaded roller blinds. However, the animals should not be exposed to drafts. Life rabbits or guinea pigs in the outdoor enclosure, trees, shrubs or earth buildings are imperative to ensure shadows and cooling. Under no circumstances may the animals be placed on the balcony in a cage on hot days. On the one hand, the heat builds up there, on the other hand the sun hikes and the shady square becomes a life -threatening heat trap. Regardless of whether in the apartment or in the garden – it is important that you can move freely and visit cool areas to reduce your body temperature independently.
