Don't let dogs drink from puddles!

Dusseldorf. After summer, the cooler season often brings rain and puddles form on the paths. For many dogs, the stagnant, often sparkling waters have a magical attraction and they drink from them. Caution is advised here, as dangerous bacteria can be found in the water of puddles.

Rubber boots, rain jacket, umbrella: As the seasons change, dog owners have to prepare for different weather conditions. Puddles pose an inconspicuous danger. “During a walk, exercise and curious exploration of the environment make the dog thirsty. So it’s no wonder that the animals want to quench their thirst,” explains dog expert and behavior consultant Nadja Kopp. “Puddle water also smells different than our tap water because it doesn’t contain chlorine. This makes it even more interesting for dogs.” However, the puddles and other stagnant bodies of water contain bacteria and impurities that could be harmful to pets.

Is it dangerous if my dog drinks from a puddle?
Basically, the owner should, if possible, prevent the dog from drinking from a puddle. When cars are parked, there is always the possibility that some engine oil will be mixed into the water, and fertilizers washed up on dirt roads can pose a health risk. In addition, parasites and worm eggs can be ingested through the excretions of other animals when drinking. Common reactions from the dog's body are usually diarrhea and vomiting. If left untreated, the consequences can last for a long time and weaken the dog.

Leptospirosis can still occur in autumn…
Leptospirosis is a potentially life-threatening infectious disease caused by bacteria called leptospires. Leptospires are particularly dangerous for unvaccinated dogs. The bacteria mainly enter puddles and water through the urine of rats and mice. In summer, the high temperatures help them to reproduce quickly, but with the falling temperatures in autumn, the danger is still not eliminated. Because it rains more frequently and for longer periods of time, the bacteria can sometimes survive in individual puddles for weeks.

Typical signs that the dog has been infected with the disease include fever, loss of appetite, diarrhea and vomiting. But nosebleeds and circulatory problems can also occur. The mucous membranes also turn yellowish. Since there are often only minor symptoms, yellow mucous membranes are always a reason to see a veterinarian. The four-legged friend can then be tested for leptospira via blood or urine tests.

…however, there is good protection
However, the dog expert gives a slight all-clear: “The vaccination against leptospirosis is a mandatory vaccination for dogs, which is refreshed annually. Of course, an infection can still occur. In most cases, however, the vaccination prevents a severe course of the disease. So you don't have to panic if your dog drinks from a puddle. If the infection is noticed early enough, the animals usually have a good chance of recovery and do not have to worry about long-term consequences,” explains Kopp.

Transmission of the virus to humans is possible
Important to know: Leptospirosis is a zoonosis, i.e. a disease that can be transmitted from dogs to humans. If you have flu-like symptoms, you should consult your doctor and inform him about your four-legged friend's infection.

How can I as the owner stop the dog from drinking from the puddle?
Since a dog gets thirsty while running and sniffing, puddles seem like a welcome opportunity to drink. It is therefore important that you always watch your animal and stop it with a command such as “No”. “It is best if the owner always has an alternative for the dog, such as a bottle of clean water, which can then be offered to him,” says the dog expert as a tip. If you don't have water with you, running water is a drinking alternative with a lower risk, as the concentrations of pollutants are usually lower here.

And what if the dog has taken a few sips? Stay calm and watch your four-legged friend closely. If he develops typical symptoms such as diarrhea or fever shortly afterwards, see a vet immediately. With the information that puddle water could be the cause, the doctor can quickly run the necessary tests and treat the animal accordingly.
