How much breed is agony?
On Saturday, March 1st, 7.10 p.m., at VOX and RTL+
Cologne. Nice, beautiful, agony! To meet so -called breed standards, millions of animals worldwide suffer for a lifetime. Notor to breath to the air tube collapse, herniated discs, permanent pain due to chronic inflammation or malformations and much more are the price that pets pay for it. Detlef Steves, himself a holder of an English bulldog, wants to learn more about the suffering of animals and possible solutions.
In recent years, the discussion about so -called agony is getting louder, the list of affected breeds. At the same time, influencers and celebrities with such animals on social media continue to present themselves. And everyone asserts: my animal is different, my animal is healthy!
Detlef Steves, himself a holder of a now aged English bulldog, was a big fan of this breed for many years. In the meantime, he has had a rethink and he confesses with a heavy heart that his dog also suffers from certain breed characteristics, which are also colloquially called “agony characteristics”. But what is specifically hiding behind this term? How does these characteristics get in our pets and what does this mean in detail for the life of the animals? Detlef meets experts and pet owners. In a veterinary practice in Ulm, he gets to know several affected animals and learns from veterinarian Ralph Rückert painful stories from their everyday life. In the animal pathology of Professor Dr. Achim Gruber is demonstrated by Detlef how extremely breeding on the anatomy of the animals affects and with what extreme follows. But the communication of the animals also suffers from changing body features and quickly leads to consequent misunderstandings. Dog trainer Conny Sporrer demonstrates Detlef Steves the differences on the dog meadow.
Detlef's encounters with humans and animals are sometimes dismayed and often emotional. He learns why such animals like that and what can and must be done to prevent this animal suffering in the future.
