Pet day on April 11th – Topic at RPR1

Ludwigshafen/Mannheim. The tradition of the World Home Day originally comes from the United States, but in Germany there is also this day of the over 34 million pets and their owners. After cats, dogs with 10.5 million are the largest group. An animal companion can be like a family member and help against the increasing loneliness of people. RPR1. Moderator Uwe Burkert spoke to Mirjam Cordt, behavior expert from the Rhineland Hessian Erbes-Büdesheim. She trains dogs, but also coaches people and noticed that more and more people are looking for an animal companion.

Mirjam Cordt: Especially at a time when you have the feeling that you are lonely, you can no longer maintain social contacts as it normally, as it was during the Covid time that more and more people see to have a social partner. You can see it on all the covid dogs, how many then reached for a dog.

A dog is a family member! Above all, a dog needs a lot of attention and affection. It requires more than just love for animals to do justice.

Mirjam Cordt: A dog should never just be a game dog for the children. Accepting a dog means taking up a family member for life. What do I do when it's sick? What do I do when I go on vacation? Who is he looked after by? A dog should not be viewed, already consciously as a sectional of life. And if it no longer fits me, then somewhere else.

Animals need a lot of care, but they also give back a lot.

Mirjam Cordt: In order to have a binding partner, especially for single people, as in the form of a dog, relieves social stress. Social stress is considered the greatest stress factor. It has also been shown that people who live together with dogs, which is then understandable, show fewer psychosomatic clinical pictures, since the dog increases well -being.
