Poison bait alarm – rising figures in Germany

Berlin by far leader in front of Hamburg

Berlin. The nationwide statistics of the poison bait reports lead Berlin at a large distance and thus confirms its sad reputation as the most dangerous city for dogs in Germany. A current evaluation of the dog community app Dogorama shows that 1,336 cases have been reported in the capital alone-almost twice as many as in Munich (539) And significantly more than in Hamburg (850).

Almost 300 new reports were added in Berlin last year. The perpetrators are more and more sophisticated: razor blades in sausage, rat poison in pasta or nails in the meat – bait that can hardly be seen for dog owners and can end for four -legged friends.

Alarming development in major German cities
Not only Berlin, other cities also have rising figures. The nationwide ranking of the poison bait reports since mid-2021 shows:

Berlin: 1.336 (289 in the past 365 days)
Hamburg: 850 (165)
Munich: 539 (139)
Cologne: 506 (130)
Leipzig: 318 (75)
Dortmund: 245 (79)
Hanover: 244 (77)
Braunschweig: 218 (60)
Eat: 213 (62)
Bremen: 213 (36)

“The numbers speak a clear language: The threat to dogs does not decrease – it tightens. Poison baits are now a nationwide problem that affects millions of dog owners,” explains Jan Wittmann, founder and managing director of Dogorama.

Deadly bait, hidden in everyday life
Dogorama poison bait rankingPoison baits are specifically designed where dogs are traveling every day: in parks, on forest paths, in green areas or even in residential streets and front gardens. Particularly perfidious: Many baits are prepared so that they are hardly recognizable with the naked eye. “Dog owners must not weigh themselves in false security – poison baits are unfortunately part of everyday life in many cities,” continued Wittmann.

Which baits are in circulation
The bandwidth of the bait is terrifying: perpetrators rely on prepared pieces of meat such as chopping balls or sausages, which are moved with rat poison, snail grain, frost protection agents or narcotics. Other baits are full of blades and nails: razor blades, screws or broken glass are hidden in pieces of meat and cause serious inner injuries or even death when swallowed.

Symptoms: You recognize poisoning by this
The consequences of a poison bait recording are diverse – and often develop rapidly. The first warning signals are:

  • Sudden weakness, strong tremors or cramps,
  • bloated, hard stomach,
  • Striking salivation or strong panting.

In the case of severe poisoning, dogs also show:

  • Blow mucous membranes, foam in front of the mouth,
  • Swallowing complaints, stranglery,
  • Bloody vomiting or diarrhea,

Important: If one of these symptoms appear, counts every minute – immediately seeing a vet!

Protection by community
With the danger radar, the Dogorama app offers a nationwide early warning system: reports from the community, combined with official police warnings, create a complete safety net. An internal verification system checks the authenticity of the notes.
