Police Dog Finds Autistic Teenager by Tracking the Scent of His Sock and Receives a Toy as a Gift

On many missions, dogs employed by law enforcement and rescue units are irreplaceable, particularly when it comes to finding missing people. One of these canine heroes recently stood out in Florida (United States). Thanks to him, an extremely vulnerable person who had gotten lost in the middle of the night ended up being located in time, reported FOX News.

The events took place on Tuesday April 26, 2026 at Jacksonville. Shortly before 10 p.m. local time, the sheriff's office of the county of the same name (Jacksonville Sheriff's Office) mobilized his deputies to try to find a teenager suffering from autism. The latter had vanished and his family was extremely worried.

“Ruger deserved his favorite toy”

Rugera police dog specialized in tracking, was part of the system deployed with its master Chris Havens. The quadruped was given a piece of clothing to sniff, a sock in this case, and he immediately got to work.

The Golden Retriever led his master and his colleagues to the intersection of Beach Boulevard and of Ryar Roadin the east of the city. That's where responders heard the lost teen screaming for help while in a store parking lot. He was safe and sound.

Woopets info: how does a tracking dog manage to find a missing person?

Search dogs like Ruger have an exceptional sense of smell, which allows them to detect and distinguish very precise human odors even in a saturated urban environment.

It usually starts with an object impregnated with the scent of the person being sought, such as recently worn clothing. From this olfactory signature, the dog can identify a specific trace and trace it.

In intervention, the dog often works in relative autonomy. Its handler guides it and secures its progress, but it is the animal which continuously analyzes variations in the concentration of odors to follow the trail, sometimes over several hundred meters, or even kilometers.
