Test: Butternut Box – Fresh dog food

Advertising: The manufacturer has provided several dog elections free of charge for this product test. A test report by Stefan Richter.

Boppard. In the article “Fresh dog food from ingredients in food quality” we presented 'Butternut Box'. That sounded very interesting and I gladly accepted the offer to test the food with my bitch 'Fenja'.

Since the feed of Butternut Box is tailored to the respective dog, some questions about the dog such as breed, weight, health problems, allergies and whether it is a good eater or rather picky must be answered before the actual order. A meal plan is then proposed with the information. The plan fit for 'Fenja' so far, only for the variety with pork I chose another because my bitch has light osteoarthritis. The proposed selection is therefore not rigid, the selection of varieties and the number can be adapted according to your own wishes.

So, said, done: A cardboard with ten frozen meals of 600 grams arrived after a few days. I was excited. The box was already well insulated against heat. Ice packs inside had also protected the food on the shipping route from thawing. The first impression is really good, especially because the insulation material can be compostable or disposed of over the green bin and thus recycled. For sustainability, thumbs up.

In addition to the food, there was also a slack bib as a welcome greeting. Well, 'Fenja' does not spill on the food, it looks different while drinking 😉 As recommended, I put the first bag in the fridge. The other part came into the freezer. Here you should of course take into account the additional space requirement beforehand – which I had forgotten.

The test
Butternut Box - Pork This WayIn advance – 'Fenja' gets dry food in the morning and 300 grams of wet food in the evening. Since the first meal came out of the fridge, I put half the content of the bag in the dog bowl and warmed up in the microwave at 600 watts for a minute and a half. It should be noted here, I do not recommend a higher performance and duration. Always microwave? No, I usually finish the portion early on that it has room temperature at the feeding period.

A pleasant fragrance came towards me when I got it out of the microwave, which could have been a dish for me. But 'Fenja' has an even finer nose and was already ready. So go for the first test.

My dog is not so picky, but sometimes a bit reserved with new food. However, nothing with reluctance – the delicious smell that has previously climbed into her nose was the sign for her, it must be good! And indeed, the bowl was empty and her eyes said “and there is a look after”. So passed the first test.

In the following time, the other meals with chicken, beef and salmon were on the test plan. She liked to eat and tolerate all of these varieties. In addition to the three varieties I have ordered, lamb, pig and duck chicken are also available.

It depends on the content
Butternut box - ingredientsWell, it's a point whether the dog likes to eat the food and tolerate it well. But what about the content? A good dog food also has to support dog health. So I looked at the composition and nutritional information of the individual dog elections under products and they speak for themselves – here are some components:

  • High quality meat (six different varieties)
  • Sustainable fish (Omega – 3 for healthy skin)
  • broccoli (supports the immune system)
  • Peas (good for skin, heart and eyes)
  • Carrot (good for stomach and intestine)
  • Lentils (for regulating the digestive system)
  • Sweet potatoes (for healthy nerves and muscles)
  • Cranberries (for the immune system)
  • rosemary (for a healthy digestion)
  • turmeric (natural inflammatory inhibitor)
  • Brewer's yeast (for a healthy nervous system)
  • linseed (Omega – 3 for a healthy fur)
  • Minerals (Support normal body function)

The dog elections themselves are made in food quality, without artificial preservatives and flavors. The feed is gently cooked at 90 degrees, then frozen and vacuum sealed. In this way, vitamins and minerals are optimally preserved.

Butternut Box - dog food explained“It is important to us to only produce products that taste good and help dogs to live a healthy and happy life,” said Butternut Box. I can, well, actually only underline fenja '. She loves the food, it supports her health and well -being. Whereupon we dog owners, especially when changing the feed, pay attention to: bowel movements. I was able to find that the fecal consistency of her is normal as usual and it doesn't have to be more common either. I noticed positively that the drop in the crotch has decreased. A sign of good digestibility and utilization of meals.

Cost of the Butternut Box meal?
Although savings are rarer in the dog, you still look at the price. The cost of meals is flexible for the different breeds and dog sizes – a small dog needs a smaller amount of feed every day, a larger one more. 'Fenja', a German Shepherd Hovawart Mix, weighs 25 kilograms. The Butternut Box meal (½ bag = 300 g) Depending on the variety of varieties, around two euros a day, depending on the variety of varieties. For comparison: a 300 gram shell costs an average of 0.75 (Discounter article) and 1.30 euros (Branded articles). For me, the price at Butternut Box for a fresh, healthy wet food tailored to my dog is perfectly fine and it is still conveniently delivered to the front door.

Test result
The first meal was already promising. 'Fenja' is eleven years old and in terms of health. All the more I pay attention to a good, healthy dog food and the meals of Butternut Box. I know, dog nutrition and change of feed is a difficult topic. I also don't like to change dog food. Well, everything fits here and that the company also supports needy dogs is another plus.

Butternut Box-Charity idea
Imagine a world in which all dogs get a bowl of fresh food every day. Wouldn't that be nice? When the co -founders Kev and Dave founded “Butternut Box”, they were determined to build a company that would change the world for good. That is why they donate the price of a meal – or sometimes the meal itself – to needy dogs for every new customer who registers at “Butternut Box”.

It is estimated that there are 600 million stray dogs worldwide. That is 600 million dogs without access to basic care and support. “Butternut Box” helps to change this by donating part of the funds to projects that deal with the vaccination, sterilization and care of dogs that would otherwise be neglected.

My conclusion: trying out is worthwhile and new customers receive a great discount. Further information at www .but ter nut box .com. (Stefan Richter)
