“Thank you for seeing his value”: this 12-year-old dog is adopted after more than 2,600 days at the shelter (video)

At 12 years old, Gizmo knew the shelter in Chillicothe, Missouri (United States), better than any visitor: as FOX 4 reports, this 34 kg Labrador cross had lived there for more than 2,000 days, watching his cubicle neighbors leave one after the other. In June 2026, a video posted by a Kansas association shared heartwarming news.

“ 7 years of waiting. 7 years of watching people come and go. 7 years of hoping that one day, someone would finally choose him. And now… This day has come », writes the association in the caption.

Watching others leave, year after year

The senior doggie had arrived a few years earlier in this shelter in Missouri. From then on, his daily life went into a loop, between the bowl, the naps and the spectacle, behind the gate, of families leaving with another companion. His own stay stretched from one year to the next.

Why such a long wait? Facing visitors, Gizmo left with 2 handicaps: his already numerous years and a physique which hardly attracted attention. With its 34 kg, it also represented a significant size for many families.

His health required constant care, including a heart murmur. The association specifies that this breath required treatment for the thyroid and that these age-related problems meant that the old resident was often ignored by candidates for adoption.

None of this tarnished his good humor, which remained visibly intact over the years. Without a home of his own, Gizmo built a replacement for himself with the shelter team, whom his cheerful character had won over a long time ago.

“Thank you for hanging in there all these years.”

In early June 2026, someone finally chose it. The 12-year-old adult dog has left the area for good, heading to a home just for him.

The association has not forgotten those who surrounded the 4-legged companion during this long stay. “ To the shelter staff, volunteers, foster families, donors, those who shared and everyone who stopped to give him affection… Thank you. You gave Gizmo comfort, security, friendship and hope during the longest chapter of his life “, she emphasizes.

A word also for her new adopters: “ And to the family who adopted him… Thank you for seeing his value. You didn't just adopt a dog today. You changed his whole world », continues On A Mission KC.

Finally, to the principal concerned, the association reserves its last words. “ Gizmo, my friend… We love you so much. Thanks for hanging in there all these years. Thank you for your trust in people. Now enjoy cozy beds, quiet nights, treats, adventures and all the love you deserve », she concludes.
