Uelzen. Uelzener Insurance has evaluated almost 128,000 dog names. The result: classics like Luna and Buddy lead the ranking. But if you look closer, you will discover a surprising variety, ranging from Nordic gods and British detectives to composers and chocolate bars.
Luna leads the females (2,099 mentions) tops the ranking by a wide margin, followed by Emma (1,352) and Bella (1.210). Buddy is the male dog (1,060) first place, with Baloo (918) and Bruno (811) close on the heels.
Divine and ingenious company on four paws
Many dog owners in Germany are inspired by Nordic and Greek mythology. The all-father of the Nordic gods Odin is by far the most popular god's name for male dogs with 362 mentions and is therefore in the top 25. He is followed by Loki, the Nordic trickster, as well as Zeus, Ares and Apollo from the Greek celestial kingdom.
Great geniuses from science and culture also serve as role models – such as the famous physicist Einstein. Goethe, Mozart and Da Vinci are also represented, which places the German four-legged friends, at least nominally, in elite cultural society.
Between tradition and pop culture
In addition to modern top names such as Luna, Emma and Bella, there is a wide range. Dog owners orientate themselves on old German names such as Erna, Käthe and Hilde as well as characters from literature, film and television. These include Asterix heroes such as Obelix and Idefix, Athos and Aramis from The Three Musketeers or Sherlock and Watson. Bambi from the Disney film of the same name, the amateur detective Miss Marple from Agatha Christie, Khaleesi from Game of Thrones and Peppa from the animated series about the Pig family can also be found in the data. Hardly surprising: Snoopy, the most famous dog in the comic book world, is also there.
Sweets and drinks are very popular
Dog names like Milky, Bounty or Toffee are well-known and associated with sweet pleasure. Here it quickly becomes clear what the dog owner's favorite treat is. Names such as whiskey, tequila and Pepsi are also included on the list and reveal that the drinks menu probably also contributes to the naming.
