This is how dangerous bird flu is for dogs etc.

Hamburg. Bird flu has already spread to ten federal states in Germany. This year's unusually strong outbreak is being spread by wild birds – currently particularly cranes – and the infectious disease is already having a massive impact on factory farming. Concern is also growing among pet owners: Cats in particular can become infected with the disease under certain circumstances – outdoor cats are primarily at risk. The risk for dogs has so far been lower, but the animal welfare foundation FOUR PAWS believes that they should also be protected as a precautionary measure.

“Cats can become infected with the bird flu virus if they have direct contact with infected birds or other animals. Consuming undercooked meat or unpasteurized milk can also pose a risk. There is also the possibility of indirect transmission via contaminated objects such as shoes or clothing that have come into contact with infected animals or their excretions. There is also evidence that transmission from humans to cats could be possible. No typical course of infection is known in dogs, but they should too “Be protected from potential sources of danger,” says Dr. Sabrina Karl, qualified biologist and pet expert at FOUR PAWS.

Typical symptoms in infected pets
Various signs of illness can occur, especially in cats. These include heavy discharge from the eyes and nose as well as neurological abnormalities such as tremors, seizures or impaired coordination. Respiratory symptoms such as coughing, sneezing or difficult breathing can also occur. In addition, affected animals often show general signs of illness such as fever, loss of appetite and pronounced lethargy. “So far, no typical symptoms associated with bird flu have been documented in dogs, but any unusual changes in behavior or health problems should be taken seriously and clarified by a veterinarian,” says Dr. Sabrina Karl.

How to protect cats and dogs

Shoes that may have come into contact with bird droppings should be kept out of the reach of pets and thoroughly disinfected,” says the FOUR PAWS expert. Pet owners should also wash their hands regularly, especially after spending time outdoors or coming into contact with potentially contaminated surfaces. FOUR PAWS strongly advises against feeding pets raw meat or unpasteurized dairy products, even if no cases have yet been reported in dairy cows in Europe. “When walking your dog, care should be taken to ensure that it does not come into contact with wild birds, dead birds, poultry or their excrement in contaminated water,” says Dr. Sabrina Karl continues.

What to do if you suspect an infection?
“If there is any suspicion that a pet may have come into contact with the bird flu virus, a veterinarian should be contacted immediately,” says the expert. Early clarification can help minimize risks and prevent possible spread.
