Boppard. For many dog owners, the four -legged friend is a full family member who should not be missing on vacation. But traveling with the dog requires careful planning and knowledge of the current provisions. While the basic rules are unlikely to change, there are adjustments and tightened checks that need to be considered. What is traveling to traveling dog owners this year and what should you pay particular attention to, whether you are traveling by plane, train or by car?
Airplane: New rule for dogs A significant innovation concerns flying with dogs. In Italy it was decided that dogs can travel in the cabin in the future regardless of their size, provided that their own seat was booked for them. This could also expand to other countries and airlines. Nevertheless, dogs still have to travel in a transport container that is securely attached. The costs for this service could vary, so it is advisable to find out more in advance from the respective airline.
Travel by plane:
Strict and with special rules
Dogs in the cabin: except Italian airlines, are usually only small dogs (up to 8 kg, including transport bag) Allows you to find space in the cabin in a suitable, waterproof and lockable transport bag under the front seat. The exact dimensions and weight limits vary depending on the airline and should be requested in advance. One trend is that the number of animals in the cabin is further limited per flight.
- Dogs in the cargo room: Larger dogs have to travel in the air -conditioned cargo. For this, an IATA-compliant transport box is (IATA ⇾ International Air Transport Association) prescribed. Pay attention to the right size, sufficient ventilation and that the dog stands upright, turning and lying comfortably. The box must be designed with absorbing material.
- Racial restrictions: Many airlines have racial restrictions, especially for short nautical ones (Brachycephale) Breed (like boobs, French bulldogs), because these breathing problems can develop during flight. It is possible that this list will be expanded in the future or that the requirements for the transport of these breeds will be tightened. Here, too, you should inquire at the airline at an early stage.
- Booking and confirmation: Register the dog with the airline early. The places for animals are limited and must be confirmed.
- Transitaide and entry requirements: Be sure to note the entry requirements of the target country in international flights (e.g. quarantine, special vaccinations).
- At the airport: Always plan enough time for check-in and security controls. Get used to the dog in advance to the transport box and the noises at the airport.
Train trips with the dogThere are no basic new regulations for train travel, but it remains important to find out about the regulations of the respective railway company. In many European countries, small dogs can travel free of charge or discounts, while larger dogs often need their own ticket. A safe transport box or leash is usually mandatory. Dogs that do not travel in a transport box usually have to be leashed and wear a muzzle. Further information on the Deutsche Bahn homepage.
carWhen traveling by car, securing the dog remains a central topic. According to the road traffic regulations, animals are considered a cargo that must be sufficiently secured. A transport box or a special seat belt for dogs is therefore required. Those who do not adhere to these regulations risk fines between 35 and 75 euros. In addition, regular breaks should be planned so that the dog can move and drink.
