Woopets info: why do some dogs run away long distances?

While some dogs do not stray too far from their home after escaping, others may venture miles or even much further. Several factors explain such behavior:

  • The reproductive instinct: an unsterilized dog can be attracted to a female in heat, even several kilometers away.
  • Fear or stress: a violent noise (fireworks, storm, etc.) can trigger an uncontrolled and prolonged leak.
  • The hunting or pursuit instinct: some dogs follow a track or an animal without perceiving the distance traveled.
  • A lack of landmarks: disoriented, the dog continues to move forward instead of finding its way, especially in unfamiliar terrain.
  • The search for resources: the search for food, water or shelter can push him to explore ever further.
