Frankfurt. The best friend of man is increasingly conquering the world of gastronomy. A current survey by Opentable shows that for many Germans the dog is simply part of the restaurant visit. But while dog owners appreciate the time together, they face some challenges.
The numbers speak a clear language: 40 percent of the dog owners stated that they often take their four -legged friend to eat (1). Eating with a dog is particularly popular in summer – 74 percent of the owners then go to a restaurant or café with their dog at least once a month (1). And guests with a dog seem to be weatherproof: While 74 percent of Germans prefer to sit outside when the weather is nice, 58 percent of dog owners remain even outdoors even in bad weather (1).
Four paws welcome?
But the desire to have the loyal companion could hit hurdles: 59 percent of dog owners stated that their greatest challenge is to find dog -friendly restaurants (1). Another 57 percent worry about disturbing other guests – a feeling that is particularly pronounced in Generation Z with 72 percent (1).
In fact, the dog friendship of a restaurant can have measurable effects on the market. “If you compare dog -friendly restaurants and those in which dogs are not allowed, dog -friendly restaurants have recorded a 14 percent higher increase in restaurant visits every year,” explains Lea Stadler, Senior Director of Global Sales and Services at OpenTable. “We are in the middle of the outdoor season. methodology
1. Opentable data: Opentable analyzed the number of placed guests from online reservations for all active restaurants on the platform in Germany, which were marked with the “dog-free” attribute from April 1, 2024 to March 31, 2025, and compared them to the same periods of the previous year and with restaurants without “dog-friendly” marking.
2. Methodology of consumer research: An online survey was carried out by Walr under 1,500 German consumers. The survey took place between the 22nd and 25th April 2025 and took place in compliance with the MRS (Market Research Society) and Esomar guidelines to ensure ethical and precise data acquisition.
3. Characterizes restaurants that are considered dog -friendly at May 2025. Changes are reserved and it is at the discretion of the respective restaurant in which areas of pets are allowed. Please note that this only applies to well -behaved dogs.
4. Methodology of the top 50 restaurants with outdoor spaces for outdoor dining 2025: The list is based on over 300,000 reviews of verified OpenTable guests as well as on restaurant metrics from April 1, 2024 to 31 March 2025. Restaurants with a minimum number of guest reviews were taken into account and the percentage of unique data points, including the percentage Five-star reviews, the number of notifications set, the percentage of the reservations made in advance, the percentage of capacity and direct search.
