Cats are true individualists – even when it comes to eating. Some are picky like small gourmets, others hastily plunge to every meal or have very special preferences. But what is behind such peculiarities and when should you become aware?
Like a bird
Perhaps you know it from your cat: the freshly served food is first eyed suspiciously, then sniffed before the first hesitant bites are taken – if at all. Sometimes the chunks are transported out of the bowl with the paw and also eaten. The latter can indicate a bowl with too small with an excessive edge.
Tip: Heasting gourmets are easier to convince by slightly warming up the feed. Topping also makes the feed more attractive, about a few splashes tuna juice.
Curious desires
Cats that suffer from Pica syndrome prefers to chew on indigestible objects and eat them. Plastic, synthetic fibers, wool or cardboard are very popular. Pica is probably partly genetically due to, but can also be the result of an organic problem (e.g. lack of nutrients). The cats are literally addicted to “their fabric”; Stress and boredom can increase the problem.
Note: Pica itself cannot be healed, but the cause can be found and treated – especially if it is a medical nature.
She can only do if someone looks
This phenomenon usually affects older and/or traumatized cats: you need good things, stroke or even hand feeding to be able to eat food. This behavior is due to stress and can have dangerous consequences if the caregiver fails once and the food is refused.
Tip: Create a quiet environment for feeding and establish solid routines. The stability obtained from this helps her cat feel safer even with meals.
