Understand cats – between the meow, purr and look

The body language of a cat is subtle, but clearly. Cats show their feelings not only by meowing, hissing or purring, but also by eyes, ears, tail and attitude. Anyone who interprets the signals correctly can avoid misunderstandings and make living together more harmonious. Every cat is unique and your mood can change in a fraction of a second – attention is the key.

Mowing, hissing and purring: The language of the sounds

Mowing is almost exclusively reserved for us humans. A quiet, short meow can be a request to signal a long, haunting, urgent meow: “I now want my attention or food!” Cats are endurance champions when it comes to their wishes.

Humpering or growling clearly show: “Stop! Stop!” – They are warning signals and do not automatically mean aggression. Other cats usually respect these signs immediately.

Purring is often associated with well -being, but can also express self -calion or pain management. Interestingly, purring even supports the healing of muscles, bones and tendons through vibrations.

  • Miau: Communication with people
  • Futs / growl: warning, defense
  • Purr: well -being, calming down, promotion of healing

Body language: tail, eyes and ears as a mood barometer

The tail is a clear indicator of the mood of a cat. An upright cock signals joy and self -confidence, a twitching tip indicates a game -mood or cozy need. Rowed or cut tail shows fear, an upright offense: willingness to defend. If you want to deepen your understanding of the meanings of tail husbandry, you will learn more in our article: Understanding cat language: The tails.

Eyes and ears are also important signals. Concepted pupils can show combat readiness or playful mood, widened pupils mostly fear or stress.
