Dangerous Summer Fruits for Dogs – DogNews

Dog with poisonous summer fruitsBoppard. While some fruits are not problematic (see “Healthy summer fruits for dogs”), There are others that dogs should not eat because they can be poisonous or harmful to health. The most dangerous summer fruits for dogs include:

  • Grapes and Raisins: These are highly toxic to dogs and can cause acute kidney failure, even in small amounts. The exact cause is still unknown, but symptoms range from vomiting to diarrhea to lethargy and loss of appetite. In the worst case, consumption can be fatal.
  • Avocado: It contains persin, a substance that is toxic to dogs and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and heart problems.
  • Stone fruits ⇾ such as cherries, plums, peaches, apricots: The seeds of these fruits contain hydrogen cyanide, which is released when bitten and can cause serious poisoning. In addition, swallowed seeds can lead to an intestinal obstruction. The pulp itself is non-toxic and can be given in small quantities
    · Citrus fruits ⇾ such as oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruit: They contain a lot of acid and essential oils, which can irritate the gastrointestinal tract and lead to vomiting and diarrhea.
  • Starfruit (carambola) and quinces: Star fruit in particular can cause problems in dogs with kidney disease and, in some cases, even affect heart function. Quinces contain tannins that are difficult for dogs to digest and can cause digestive problems. Quince seeds contain hydrogen cyanide, which can cause neurological disorders.
  • Juniper berries: These berries are poisonous to dogs. Juniper berries contain essential oils and diterpenic acid (isocupressic acid), which can cause irritation of the gastrointestinal tract, kidney damage in dogs and uterine irritation in pregnant animals.
  • Elderberries: They are highly toxic to dogs because they contain the glycoside sambunigrin, which can release hydrogen cyanide. Hydrocyanic acid is toxic to dogs and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, seizures and, in the worst case, death.
  • Deadly Nightshade: It is one of the most poisonous plants ever. Deadly nightshade contains tropical alkaloids, L-hyoscyamine and scopolamine. These substances in belladonna are highly toxic and represent a high level of danger for dogs and humans. Ingestion can lead to convulsions, respiratory paralysis, rapid heartbeat and even cardiac arrest – death.
  • Rhubarb: Rhubarb is toxic to dogs because it contains oxalic acid, especially in the leaves. This acid can block the absorption of important minerals such as calcium and lead to health problems such as kidney damage. Rhubarb can also cause gastrointestinal problems such as vomiting or diarrhea.
  • Unripe tomatoes and green plant parts: They contain solanine and tomatine, which are toxic to dogs. These substances can cause symptoms of poisoning such as gastrointestinal complaints, diarrhea, vomiting, drowsiness, loss of coordination and cardiac arrhythmias. Ripe, red tomatoes in small quantities are generally safe.

It is important to ensure that the dog does not have access to these dangerous fruits. If you are unsure or suspect that your dog has eaten a poisonous fruit, always contact a veterinarian immediately. (Stefan Richter)
