Hunter lives in Botswana, and while working with his owner, he was attacked by a crocodile, then treated properly to avoid any after-effects. Through the presence of Wendy Furness and Michael Colgan, an organization from the United Kingdom provided real support in the smooth running of care in this inaccessible area. The desire to preserve animal welfare, coming from local stakeholders and external caregivers, is highlighted in this story.
That day, the horse was taking a break and went to drink when the wild animal emerged from the water to attack its leg, says Horse and Hound. Wendya lifeguard from the Maun Animal Welfare Society (MAWS), reports the owner’s worrying comments: “The fangs clench then the animal pulls to drown its victims, so the horse was very lucky to be able to escape, but also to do so without breaking any bones”. The horse still suffered a significant injury to a rear leg.
A particular fauna
The keepers got to know the environment in which they lived for more than a week. Hunter itself is a horse used for work and for livestock and to transport its owner from one point to another in the delta ofOkavangoa territory that is difficult to access. Wendy adds: “Livestock live alongside wildlife and it is not uncommon to see zebras with them too”.

The owner ofHunter approached the volunteer caregivers because he was aware of their presence in the region. Wendy was able to intervene quickly by auscultating the animal. She found that the wound had partly healed, but areas remained infected. The area has been cared for and Wendy provided antibiotics and equipment to ensure further care.
The owner sent a photo of the progress of the wound and Wendy was able to see that the care had been perfectly applied.
750 animals cared for
Hunter is not the only one to have benefited from the presence of the Maun Animal Welfare Society. In total and in just over a week, 750 animals were helped.
Beyond the concrete assistance provided, the team present raised a lot of awareness about animal welfare. In return, she notes that she has met a large number of owners who are very attentive to the needs of their animals and determined to do their best.
