Boppard. The Lost Dog Day on April 23rd is a day of action that draws attention to the problem of lost and missing pets. Every year, thousands of dogs and cats disappear, often due to fear, panic or unforeseen events such as fireworks or natural disasters.
The international animal protection organization FOUR PAWS launched this day in 2023 to emphasize the importance of identifying and registering pets. By chipping and registering with pet centers such as TASSO, lost animals can be more easily identified and returned to their owners. For responsible dog owners, this is an important step to ensure the safety of their four-legged friend.
Another focus of this day is combating the illegal puppy trade. Mandatory identification and registration would not only make it easier to return missing animals, but also curb the criminal trade in pets. Likewise, the regulation of online trading to combat the illegal puppy trade is an important point, but it has not yet been completed. Despite the planned measures and legislative initiatives, there are still many challenges, particularly in enforcing the law and combating criminal networks.
This day is an opportunity for pet owners to realize their responsibility towards their pets and take steps to ensure their safety. (Stefan Richter)
