In our case, it was also important to remember that Grete is not necessarily the type of dog that deals calmly with changes and unfamiliar situations, strangers and stressful moments. Traveling by plane was therefore out of the question for us. But it shouldn't be Italy, Croatia or other southern countries that can be reached by car this year.
East Frisia “Oostfreesland” is a region in Lower Saxony in the extreme northwest of Germany. It lies on the coast of the North Sea and, in addition to the mainland, also includes the East Frisian islands of Borkum, Juist, Norderney, Baltrum, Langeoog and Spiekeroog.
This late summer, our little traveling party of 3, 8 legs had the luxury of going on vacation for three weeks at a time. Because me North Sea had always been attractive, the decision was made quickly. We couldn't have imagined that we could not only satisfy my curiosity about the Frisian landscape, but also fulfill Grete's doggy ideas of an almost perfect holiday.
Arrival in East Frisia
We divided the long journey from Graz to Großheide of around 1,200 kilometers into two days so that Grete, whose favorite pastime is not necessarily driving, was not exposed to the strain of being in an uncomfortable car all day long.
Halfway there we stayed overnight in a place we had booked in advance Hotel in Oberthulba (“Rhöner Land”), where dogs were allowed. We stayed in a room on the ground floor, which had one direct exit to a meadow had. However, dogs were not allowed in the restaurant/breakfast room, which is why Mario, my partner, and I had a somewhat uncomfortable separate breakfast because we didn't want to leave Grete alone in an unfamiliar environment.
Seven hours later we finally got to ours Destination in East Frisia arrived: a small one Holiday home called “Moin, Moin”which is rented by the Kruismann family, who live in the building next door. The little house has its own fenced-in garden, which Grete immediately declared to be her kingdom. By the way, we found the accommodation and the hotel online. You can now click on the “Pets allowed” button on almost all booking portals. The description of the holiday home in Großheide finally convinced us.
Off to the East Frisian Sea!
As soon as we arrived we started Wadden Sea. Großheide is about ten kilometers from the sea, so a car is essential. In Neßmersiel we came across the first of many dog beacheswhich is also free to use from 5 p.m.

However, it is mandatory to keep on a leash throughout the entire area; dogs are not allowed to access the normal bathing beach. I was particularly happy about the fenced-in agility area, which is right next to the dog beach (of course there is no leash requirement here).

Grete quickly made friends with the overexcited Jule and got rid of the stress of the long car ride. The long journey to East Frisia was already worth it!
Get to know East Frisia with your dog

On the following days we explored East Frisia. My absolute favorite was that Pilsum lighthousewhich sits enthroned on a lush green meadow like in a picture book. However, crossing the grazed dikes (sheep, cows) with dogs is strictly prohibited, as numerous warning signs remind you. In the Nature reserves To protect birds, it is mandatory to keep them on a leash. But it was still enough for a long walk around the yellow and red tower, which is known from the Otto Waalkes film.
The city of Norddeich also has this Carolinensiel over a large dog beach with dunes and access to the Wadden Sea.
The original plan, with the short-legged Grete at one of the famous mudflat hikes Participation, but had to be rejected after a short, involuntary trip into the “Gatsch”. She got stuck in it and barely managed to free herself.

In principle, dogs are allowed guided mudflat hikeswhich usually belong to one of the offshore islands like Baltrum or Norderney lead, but possible. However, the dog should be in good physical condition, as moving forward in the mud is very difficult in places, and should also be quite insensitive to cold – at least in the cooler season.
So we preferred to take the ferry with Grete Langeoog Islandwhere we spent a wonderful sunny day on the beach. A ticket must also be purchased for dogs on the ferries. How expensive this is depends on the island you are visiting. The demarcation between dog beaches and normal beaches is not as strict on the islands as on the mainland and so we had the opportunity to walk along the kilometer-long sandy beach.

Once you've had enough of the sea and the beach, this is the place to be Lütetsburg Castle Park as Excursion destination in East Frisia to. The 30-hectare park, which is the largest English landscape garden in East Frisia, has numerous paths that are ideal for taking a dog for a walk. Here you can spend relaxing hours in a varied environment.

In north we went on a short shopping trip. What was striking was that, like almost everywhere, there were numerous shops and cafes in front of them Drinking bowls for dogs stand. The frequency of four-legged friends is particularly high not only on the designated beaches, but also in the hinterland and in the East Frisian cities. Incidentally, Grete was almost always exemplary and polite towards her northern German colleagues, who were usually very friendly. East Frisia generally attracts a lot of German tourists, primarily older ones. As an Austrian you are almost seen as exotic and the linguistic differences often make you smile.
Destination Eternal Sea

This is another attraction in East Frisia Eternal seaa raised moor lake, around which paths have been installed which, accompanied by somewhat outdated educational signs, lead through the moor landscape. Dogs are welcome here too, but they are not allowed to leave the paths. You should stick to this because there are adders living here!
The specially marked ones turned out to be a bit disappointing Dog hiking trails in Dornumersiel out of here. This is just a short tour on the dike cycle paths. But well, not every day can be a highlight…
On the road with bike & dog in East Frisia
Since East Frisia, despite the wind, Cycling destination applies and you can rent bikes in every larger town, we also went on an excursion where Grete was chauffeured. What we had a lot of fun with, Grete wasn't entirely sure about. But our destination, the dog beach in Schillig, made up for it and since we were able to enjoy a tailwind on the way home, the scary journey was quickly over.

Return home after a wonderful vacation
After almost three weeks it was time to go home again. The long route from East Frisia to Austria was again divided into two days, with a stopover in Erlangen in a “B&B” hotel. Aufs Breakfast at the hotel But we decided not to go there this time and were back in Graz in the early afternoon. Incidentally, Grete was only able to relax and take a nap in familiar surroundings after she had left a message to all her colleagues in the park that she was back.
On the whole it is East Frisia for a relaxed one Vacation with four-legged friends spot on!
