Dog nutrition – healthy through the winter

Boppard. Winter poses some risks for dogs. A balanced diet is the be-all and end-all to get you through the winter healthy.

Dangers for dogs in winter

  • Cooled down: Dogs can get cold quickly, especially small breeds or those with short fur.
  • Poisonings: Road salt, antifreeze and other chemicals can be toxic to dogs.
  • Ice slippery: Risk of injury from slipping and falling.
  • Reduced visibility: Snow and darkness can make orientation difficult.

Balanced diet

  • More energy: Due to winter temperatures, dogs generally require more energy in the winter. A high-quality feed with sufficient protein and fat covers this increased need.
  • Healthy fats: Unsaturated fatty acids support the immune system and contribute to a shiny coat.
  • Sufficient water: Even though dogs drink less in winter, adequate fluid intake is important.
  • Vitamins and minerals: A balanced mixture supports the immune system. Carrots, sweet potatoes and parsnips are full of important vitamins and minerals. Winter salads such as endive, chicory and lamb's lettuce also enrich your four-legged friend's diet.

What is recommended?

  • High quality food: Pay attention to a balanced composition and high-quality ingredients.
  • Individual advice: Consult your veterinarian to find the optimal food for your dog.
  • Additional additions: In consultation with the veterinarian, nutritional supplements can be useful to strengthen the immune system.
  • Healthy snacks: Reward your dog every now and then with healthy snacks such as carrots or apple pieces.

Winter tips

  • Warm clothing: Special dog coats are recommended for walks in cold weather.
  • Paw care: Check the paws regularly for injuries and the ingress of salt or ice.
  • Short walks: In extreme cold, walks should be kept shorter.

An optimal diet, combined with the right precautions, will help the dog get through the winter healthy and happy. (Stefan Richter)
