Exhibition: man and animal. History of a relationship

Königswinter. The story between humans and animals was always the subject of artistic examination and testifies to long mutual relationships. Thematically, the animal representations cannot be clearly categorized: they range between genre and landscape scenes, historical representations and portrait. This corresponds to the role model of animals, which for a long time were considered for farm animals and reliable companions of humans and were only considered an almost equivalent in the 19th century. Pets, especially dogs and cats, have now become spoiled houses who received the status of a beloved family member. The portrait -like representations of dogs from Gustav Zick or Clara von Wille illustrate this new status.

For a long time, the nobility reserved the privilege of hunting, which is reflected in countless hunting images. Horses were considered indispensable farm animals, but here too, personal relationships between the rider and his horse were built up, which could even artistically culminate in a single animal portrait.

In the 19th century, the scientific consideration and categorization of the animal also came to the center of research: subsequently scenic representations were created, which showed the individual animal in its natural environment.

Oil painting with dog (symbol image)The exhibition from May 16 to November 2 illustrates the versatile relationship based on various topics, which also include the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm or the ancient mythology. Lending gives from the Middle Rhine Museum Koblenz, the Dr. AXE Foundation Bonn, the LVR Landesmuseum Bonn and the Rhine Romanticism Collection as well as private loans convey a colorful artistic image of the living together of humans and animals.
