For the health of your cat: better provide for – or better?

Do you go to your family doctor regularly and be checked in terms of health? If so, you will probably also go with your cat regularly to examine the vet.

Unfortunately, cats do not always allow us to share their state of health, because they can even suppress serious symptoms of illness for a very long time and thus hide from us.

Hence the recommendation: bring your cat every one to two years for a general investigation into the veterinary practice. A look into the eyes, mouth and ears, hear the heart, claw and weight control as well as temperature measurement- more usually does not have to be done.

How often should cats be dewormed?

A apartment cat hardly runs the risk of infecting with worms. In theory, they could carry the worm eggs home on their shoes, which would then have to be absorbed orally by the cat. A fly that had previously sat on infected feces could also sit on the cat food and thus transfer the worm egg. However, the likelihood is extremely low and does not justify the prophylactic use of deworming preparations.

With housing cats, it is therefore advisable to bring a fecal sample to be passed by the veterinarian once a year. From your own practical experience, a positive wormier finding is very rare, so that only very few apartment cats ever need a deworm preparation.

Cats with free access, on the other hand, very often show a worm infestation in fecal samples, so that depending on the worm preparation and infection pressure from monthly to twice a year, deworming can be carried out.

Vaccinations: As much as necessary, as little as possible

We have all known since Corona pandemic: the spirits differ on the vaccinations. While some are based on the expert opinions, others act according to the principle “a lot helps a lot”, and still others see evil in principle. So also with the vaccinations for our cats.

A vaccination recommendation for your cat is individually created by your veterinarian based on your age and living conditions. Not much helps with vaccinations. In order to bring some light into the dark, the constant Veterinary Medicine Veterinary Medicine Veterinary Medicine (STIKO VET) has launched a guideline for vaccination of small animals that is available online for all pet owners.
