Woopets info: what is canine demodicosis?

Also called demodectic scabies, this disease is caused by the excessive proliferation of a mite called Demodex canis which lives naturally in the hair follicles of most dogs without causing any problems. The condition occurs when the animal's immune system is no longer able to control its population.

The first signs are often areas of hair loss, redness and thickening skin. In the most severe forms, bacterial infections can be added and cause itching, scabs or a bad odor. Demodicosis mainly affects young dogs whose immune defenses are still immature, but it can also develop in adults suffering from a pathology or weakening of their body.

The treatment, prescribed by the veterinarian, depends on the extent of the lesions and the general condition of the doggie. It may combine antiparasitic drugs, local care and, if necessary, antibiotics to treat secondary infections.

Please note that demodicosis is not considered a contagious disease between dogs nor transmissible to humans. Rapid consultation as soon as the first symptoms appear can limit the progression of lesions and improve the chances of recovery.
