Live healthier with a dog – Dog News

What science knows about the human-dog relationship.
Five positive effects from research.

Dusseldorf. Dogs have earned the ascription “man’s best friend” over thousands of years. Numerous studies have already shown that this special relationship has a lot to offer: dogs have a positive effect on our physical and mental health. The five most beautiful effects:

1. Dogs reduce stress and promote relaxation
Contact with a dog can measurably reduce stress. Studies, such as a German study by Andrea Beetz et al., show that just petting a dog reduces the level of the stress hormone cortisol, while at the same time oxytocin is released – the so-called cuddle hormone stands for relaxation, trust and social bonding. This effect can occur not only with dog owners, but also with strangers who come into contact with a friendly dog.

2. Dogs promote mobility and heart health
Live healthier with a dogDogs have to go out – and their owners benefit from this. Several international studies show that dog owners, on average, exercise significantly more than people without dogs. In 2025, an Irish long-term study showed that seniors with dogs are safer on their feet and fall less often. Regular walks also have a positive effect on blood pressure, cardiovascular system and general fitness. This can measurably reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. What is less important is how strenuous the walk is, but rather how regularly the exercise is integrated into everyday life.

3. Dogs have a positive effect on mental health
Dogs can relieve loneliness and depressive moods. Various studies show a connection between dog ownership and higher emotional well-being, especially among people who live alone or older people. Dogs provide structure, respond immediately to attention and convey the feeling of being needed – an important psychological factor. Dogs do not replace therapy, but they can provide stability in everyday life.

4. Dogs strengthen social contacts
Dogs are social bridge builders. When going for a walk, conversations with pedestrians or other dog owners arise almost automatically, which can develop into permanent contacts or regular encounters. Current studies show that dog owners talk to other people more often and build social networks more easily. This effect contributes to social integration and emotional stability in the long term.

5. Dogs can support children in their development
Living with dogs also has positive effects for children. Studies suggest that children with dogs show empathetic behavior more often and develop a sense of responsibility more quickly. These effects not only occur with your own pet, but also when a dog is used in school lessons, for example. A Spanish study in 2021 even found a clear effect: all girls and boys with dogs showed advanced socio-emotional development compared to children without animals. The four-legged friend is often a playmate, listener and emotional anchor at the same time. In addition, early contact can train the immune system and reduce the risk of certain allergies.
