National Identification Week 2026: why having your dog or cat identified is so important?

In Franceidentification has been compulsory since 1999 for dogs (before the age of 4 months) and 2012 for cats (before 7 months). Carried out by a veterinarian, this procedure involves the implantation of an electronic chip under the animal's skin. Information to officially associate the furball with its owner is stored inside and recorded in the National I-CAD file.

As stipulated by law, identification must be carried out before any transfer of an animal, whether free (donation) or paid (sale). If you have just acquired or adopted an unidentified little companion, it is your responsibility to identify him as soon as possible.

Beyond the regulatory aspect, identification plays a fundamental role in the protection of our animal friends. In the event of loss, running away or theft, it considerably increases the chances of finding them quickly. Without identification, shelters, pounds and veterinarians have very few resources to locate the family of a lost animal.

In addition, identification facilitates certain administrative procedures and remains essential for traveling with your furry partner abroad. It also participates in the fight against wandering, trafficking and abandonment of animals.
