At the end of a small street in the village of Schönkamp, animal rights activists have a depressing picture: Between dense vegetation, a white bitch barks, moored with a leash that is secured over a chain. The other end of this chain is attached to an old refrigerator – it apparently serves as a place to sleep for the animal.
Freezing and drinking bowls are fallen over in the grass, water cannot be seen despite the summer heat. For Kerstin Lenz from the Tierschutzverein Demmin, it is a clear violation of the Animal Welfare Act.
Luna's “Hundehütte”: a cut fridge
A narrow path leads through scrub to the old device into which a hole was cut so that the bitch can slip into it. Luna is chained there – there does not seem to be a supply of water or run. Animal rights activist Lenz fights for the bitch's rescue, as the “Nordkurier” reports.
The chairman of the association contradicts previous information from the net that Luna is old and blind. Rather, it is a strong mix of English Bulldog and Dogo Argentino. According to neighbors, the veterinary office has been on site several times – but so far nothing has changed.
Official veterinarian checks attitude
Lenz makes it clear: Luna hardly gets movement. The animal rights activist recalls that the permanent chain posture has been banned in Germany since 2023 – with a few exceptions for certain working dogs. After the case became public, the veterinary office reacted quickly. An official veterinarian is now checking the situation, the regulatory office also sees urgent need for action.
It remains unclear to whom Luna officially belongs. The local man says that he only temporarily accepted her for a friend – this is still the owner. However, according to the regulatory office, the responsibility is clear because he has been holding the animal for a long time.
Luna does not want to hand in the owner
In the meantime, the official owner was also expressed. She explained that she originally got Luna out of poor posture. However, the bitch cannot live on her own property because she is a danger to her poultry. In addition, Luna is deaf and therefore difficult to educate.
The case is clear for animal shelter director Lenz. She offers to pick up Luna in the shelter immediately – but the owner strictly rejects this. Luna will only be handed over if the police confiscate them, she says. Now the responsible official veterinarian has to decide on how to proceed.
