News fox tapeworm cases in Germany are increasing-dog owners have to act

A parasite on the advance

The fox tapeworm spreads in Europe, in Germany the number of cases, in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg particularly clearly. Upper Bavaria is the focus. Between 1997 and 2023, over 4,200 cases of alveolar echinococcosis were recorded across Europe. The pathogen, medically echinococcus multilocularis, lives especially in the intestine of foxes. The transmission takes place via eggs that get into the environment with the feces.

Dogs as an invisible risk

Dogs are infected when they eat mice or come into contact with Fuchskot. The infection usually remains without symptoms, but animals can still transmit the pathogen to humans via feces or dirty fur. Hunting dogs and animals with wildlife contact are more at risk. City dogs without this contact bear a low risk.

Prevention is crucial

Experts advise regular worm treatments, too strict hygiene and to avoid wildlife contact. After walks in the forest and field, fur, paws and accessories should be cleaned thoroughly. Berries, vegetables and salad from land close to the ground should be washed carefully. “Hygiene, hygiene, hygiene,” emphasizes Veterinary Dr. Vanessa Herder – clean hands can save lives.
