What does a pet really cost?

Agria survey shows that the majority of pet owners in Germany spend less than 200 euros a month-but the costs increase.

Düsseldorf. Dogs and cats enrich the lives of many people in Germany – but what does their attitude actually cost? Agria Tierversicherung has investigated this question and queried the monthly expenses for feed, care, health and other areas as part of a survey among over 800 pet owners in Germany. The result: Most pet owners move under 200 euros a month – but the actual costs continue to increase.

Majority issues less than 200 euros per month
Agria survey - what does a pet costAccording to Agria's survey from November 2023, 48 percent of the cat owners and 35 percent of the dog owners stated that they spend less than 100 euros per month for their animal. Another 42 percent of dog owners and 35 percent of cat owners were in the range of 100 to 199 euros. A not so small part – 23 percent in dogs, 17 percent in cats – regularly exceeds this limit. The expenditure includes feed, veterinary costs, care, insurance and other accessories.

Animal husbandry becomes noticeably more expensive
Since the survey at the end of 2023, the costs have continued to increase in many areas. In addition to general inflation, the changes to the fee schedule for veterinarians in particular have (Got) led to significantly higher treatment costs. Food prices and accessories also increase continuously. For many pet owners, this means that the financial burden of a pet is higher than a few years ago.

What influences the expenses?
The differences in the monthly costs depend heavily on the individual animal and its needs: large dogs usually need more food and more frequent veterinary care, while apartment cats tend to cause lower running costs. Additional expenses arise, for example, by chronic diseases, special feed or regular grooming.

Observe long -term development
“Many expenses do not apply monthly, but on time or in phases – for example for vaccinations, castrations or ages for medication,” explains Dr. med. Vet. Tatjana Breiltgens, veterinarian at Agria. “It is important to plan as a animal owner in the long term. In the case of young animals in particular, there are a lot of costs at once, and the maintenance effort then increases in old age.”
