Dogs process alcohol differently than humans. Your liver cannot break down alcohol as efficiently, resulting in a faster and stronger effect. Ethanol, the main component of alcohol, has a toxic effect on the central nervous system of dogs. Even a dose of 5.5 to 7.0 milliliters of pure ethanol per kilogram of body weight can lead to poisoning.

What symptoms can occur?
The symptoms of alcohol poisoning in dogs can be varied and depend on the amount consumed and the size of the dog. The most common symptoms include:

  • Vomiting and diarrhea: The body is trying to get rid of the alcohol.
  • Coordination disorders: The dog staggers, falls or has difficulty orienting itself.

  • Apathy and tiredness: The dog appears listless and sleepy.
  • Breathing problems: In severe cases, breathing may become shallow and slow.
  • Coma: If the dose of alcohol is very high, the dog can fall into a coma.
  • Death: In the worst case scenario, alcohol poisoning can lead to death.

What to do if the dog has drunk alcohol?

How to prevent alcohol poisoning?

  • Keep alcoholic beverages and food out of the reach of dogs. Make sure there are no glasses or bottles around for the dog to drink from.
  • Do not leave alcoholic beverages unattended. Even small amounts can be dangerous for dogs.
  • Never give your dog alcoholic drinks. Not even for fun or as a “reward”.
  • Be careful of foods that may contain alcohol. Some desserts, sauces or marinades may contain alcohol.
