Vutter! – Why plant-based dog food can be the better choice?
You ask, we answer
Ihlow. Anyone who has never been the parent of a small furry friend may not be able to understand it – but everyone who has been or is can confirm: Our dogs are like our children. We love them with all our hearts, put up with a lot – from house training to puberty to old age stubbornness, change our habits and daily routines and simply want them to have everything they need.
When it comes to our “offspring”, we pay more attention to everyday decisions than to ourselves – especially when it comes to nutrition! Too much sugar or fat now and then, just a quick snack instead of a balanced meal, or skipping breakfast to sleep a little longer? That's out of the question for our four-legged friends. Here we check the composition of the food, find out about its origin and ingredients, and adjust the exact amounts and needs depending on age and breed.
It is therefore no wonder that caution is advised when launching new products on the market – especially when a premise that has been around for decades suddenly changes: My dog does not need meat and can be fed just as well – perhaps even better – on a vegan diet!
To help anyone who is still unsure and has concerns, we have answered the most common questions:
Why should I try a vegan diet with my dog?
There are various reasons for considering a vegan diet. We list the three most obvious ones here:
- You are a vegetarian or vegan yourself and don't want to let any animals suffer to feed yours.
- Your dog repeatedly has difficulty digesting different types of food. In this case, a food without animal proteins can help, as it has less potential for intolerances or allergies.
- You are still trying to figure out which food is most popular with your dog and you like to try out high-quality alternatives – regardless of whether they are vegan or meat-based: in the end, the only thing that counts is the taste!
The dog is descended from the wolf – doesn’t it need meat?
First of all – yes, our current dog breeds originally descended from wolves. But nowadays, dogs are domesticated animals that have developed into omnivores over the years. They therefore have enough enzymes to break down carbohydrates and plant proteins. More and more studies are proving that a plant-based diet is at least as healthy as a high-quality meat alternative. “We want to be able to offer the best for dogs – and that includes a healthy, wholesome and high-quality plant-based alternative. It is important to make sure that it is a complete food that is proven to meet one hundred percent of the dog’s needs and provides the dog with all the important nutrients it needs. That is the case with Vutter!,” explains Marketing Manager Lotta Buttjer, who works with her team every day to raise awareness and combat ingrained prejudices.
I want to be sure that my dog is okay – what about acceptance?
As with meat products, you can find out which vegan food your dog likes best by trying it out. However, when developing its food, Vutter! places a high emphasis on the acceptance of the animals. After all, who benefits from the best product if it is not accepted? Vutter! therefore carries out various series of tests with dog owners – always at home in familiar surroundings, long-term tests are carried out to examine tolerance and spontaneous acceptance tests in which two food bowls are given to choose from in order to record which food is preferred. “Our goal here was to achieve a 50:50 ratio, and we have achieved that,” explains Mark Albers, Managing Director of Green Plant Petfood. “A lot has already been achieved if the new product is accepted just as well as the familiar one,” he says, summing up the result: “That means the dog does not refuse.”
If you are still unsure whether a vegan diet is suitable for your dog, you should seek advice from a veterinary practice with nutritional training, consult dog nutrition experts – or ask Vutter directly!
