A lost Malinois wanders near a canal and ends up falling in, a police officer saves him with an improvised lasso

A dog that found itself in very bad shape and at risk of drowning was spotted in time by Florida State Highway Patrol officers (Florida highway patrol), one of them having acted quickly and called on his creativity to help him. A rescue story reported Gulf Coast News.

The events took place very early in the morning of Thursday May 7, 2026 in the Florida city of Cape Coral. Around 3 a.m., a visibly lost Belgian Shepherd Malinois started running alone on the boulevard Del Pradobefore slipping between several houses. His escapade ended badly, as he fell into one of the many canals that cross the city.

Quinlan Ogdonone of the members of the Florida Highway Patrol present on the scene, managed to locate the quadruped in distress while the latter was desperately trying to keep its head above water and moaning.

The policeman had to make do with what he had at hand; he found a rope and made a makeshift lasso by improvising a noose. He also fell into the water while trying to rescue the dog.

Despite everything, he managed to help the Malinois return to dry land. The survivor escaped safely.

The dog is safe and now has a nickname

He was examined at a veterinary clinic following his rescue. He also got a nice bath.

For the moment, we do not know the situation of the animal, which probably got lost, nor its identity. His saviors nickname him “ K9 Valor “, honoring the courage he showed during the incident.

Woopets info: why is the electronic identification chip essential when caring for a found dog?

In France, identification by electronic chip (or tattoo for older registrations) is compulsory for all dogs over 4 months old. This measure makes it possible to quickly link an animal to its owner via the national I-CAD file, facilitating reunion in the event of loss or runaway.

When a stray dog is taken into care by the police or taken to a veterinarian in particular, the microchip check is systematic. In a situation like that of Valuethis reflex is part of standard procedures. It allows you to immediately determine if the animal is declared lost and to identify its legal owners in order to contact them.

Even in the absence of visible information on the collar, for example, a simple chip reading can therefore change the outcome of a rescue. This is often the first step taken before any other decision regarding the care or placement of the animal in a shelter.
