Hamm center (ots). On Monday, June 22nd, Hamm police forces saved a dog from a painful heat death in a car.
The animal was discovered in the vehicle by passers-by and reported at around 10:20 a.m. The vehicle was in Hamm (North Rhine-Westphalia) parked on the shoulder of Werler Straße in the blazing sun. The police officers who were then called in noticed the animal's apparently poor general condition through the window of the car. Through witness statements, the officers were also able to find out that the dog had been in the vehicle for over an hour.
Since no owner could be found, the emergency services decided to free the dog. Lucky for the vehicle owner: One door was unlocked, so the dog could be taken out of the car without any problems. If the vehicle had been completely locked, the emergency services would have had to break a window to save the dog from the heat. The dog was then handed over to the animal shelter involved, which can take care of the animal at least for a short period of time.
The emergency services were able to contact the 50-year-old dog owner afterwards. Despite urgent instructions, he showed himself to be unreasonable and not very understanding. He is being investigated for a crime under the Animal Welfare Act.
The police warn
In warm weather, the interior of a vehicle can quickly heat up to dangerous temperatures. It can be life-threatening to leave animals inside – even if they have access to water or the window is left slightly open. Therefore, under no circumstances should you leave dogs or other pets in a parked car – even for a short time.
