Protect dogs etc. from heat

Bonn. In view of the high temperatures, the German Animal Welfare Association warns of the potential dangers for domestic and wild animals. Many animals cannot regulate their body temperature through sweating. They therefore suffer particularly from heat and dryness.

“On hot days, animals need access to fresh water and shady places to retreat at all times. You should keep a particularly close eye on your own pets on hot days in order to recognize warning signs early,” says Dr. Moira Gerlach, specialist for pets at the German Animal Welfare Association.

When keeping rabbits or guinea pigs in outdoor enclosures, owners should ensure there are sufficiently shaded areas – even when the sun is moving. Pre-cooled stone slabs or damp, hanging cloths can provide coolness. Outdoor cats usually look for shady places themselves and shift their activities to the cooler evening hours.

Protect dogs from heatIf possible, dogs should only be walked during the cooler times of the day in the early morning or evening. Asphalt can heat up significantly and cause burns to the paws. Animals must never be left in the car: after just a few minutes, life-threatening temperatures can arise inside the vehicle. Anyone who discovers an animal in an overheated vehicle should contact the police immediately.

Act quickly if overheating occurs
At the latest when animals show signs of overheating such as heavy panting, restlessness or balance problems, they must be taken out of the heat immediately and cooled down with cold water as quickly as possible. If heat stroke is suspected, veterinary attention should be sought immediately.

Waterholes help wildlife
“Wild animals are also increasingly dependent on help when natural water sources dry up,” says Paulina Kuhn, wildlife specialist at the German Animal Welfare Association. Especially in cities, hedgehogs, squirrels, wild birds and even city pigeons often find it difficult to find water in hot weather. Shallow water bowls in the garden or on the balcony, placed in the shade if possible, can help and save lives. Animal lovers often place water bowls in cemeteries or green spaces. Small stones or pieces of wood in the water bowls serve as a practical landing aid for insects. The water should be changed daily.
