Asbach (ots). The fire department in the municipality of Asbach (Neuwied district, Rhineland-Palatinate) expands its capabilities and introduces a new unit: the search dogs specialist group. This newly founded group consists of a total of six trained Mantrailer teams, each consisting of a dog handler and a specially trained dog.
Mayor Michael Christ was now able to officially put the unit into service. In this context, the military commanders of the nine units also got to know each other and the possible uses of the search dogs were presented. Fire chief Arnold Schücke highlighted the skills of the search dogs, which further strengthen the fire department's performance.
The specialist group was able to gain initial operational experience even before it was officially put into service. The Mantrailer teams were used to search for people in mid-March and supported the emergency services in the targeted tracking of traces. The missing person was found unharmed after a short time.
All members of the specialist group have completed in-depth training in the field of mantrailing. Mantrailing is a special form of person search in which dogs follow the trail of a specific person using an individual smell. In contrast to area search dogs, mantrailers work very purposefully and can even pick up and follow older tracks or tracks that have been influenced by the weather.
The strengths of these specially trained dogs lie in their ability to track individual scent trails over long distances and through a wide variety of environments, such as in forests or rough terrain. This makes them valuable support in the search for missing or helpless people.
In the future, the specialist group will be alerted whenever missing people are being sought and information about their possible whereabouts is missing or unclear. By using Mantrailers, the search can be made more efficient and the probability of finding missing people quickly can be increased.
