Tours on two legs and four paws – that's how it works
Düsseldorf. Experience nature in all its beauty, breathe in clear air and enjoy the silence together with the four -legged friend – a hiking tour is the epitome of a successful break for many dog owners. But not every dog is suitable for such activities. There are also a few things to consider when planning, for example when choosing the routes and accommodations.
Whether Chihuahua or Shepherd – in principle almost every healthy dog can go on a hike. “Mainly, factors such as age, condition and the state of health of the animal are important,” explains Nadine Rule, who, as a sports and outdoor journalist, regularly reports on tours with her dog in hiking reports. In July, for example, her book “My Happiness is four paws” appeared about her alpine crossing with a dog. “However, short -naving breeds such as pugs or bulldog can tend to breath problems and are then quickly overwhelmed in warm weather. Older animals or dogs with joint problems should no longer be sent to long, exhausting stages, but rather do a short round at relaxing pace.”
The basic requirement for hiking is that the dog enjoys movement. He should also know longer walks. Those who come from the lowlands should slowly get used to the unusual gradients at mountain stages.
Election of the route with a sense of proportion
The routes depend entirely on the fitness level of humans and animals. “If you are planning a tour of several days, you should start with rather moderate stages of ten to 20 kilometers a day,” said the expert. “Of course, the vertical meter and the underground. Smarty gravel paths or rocky terrain can be unusual for the dog. There are also special dog shoes for such terrain that protect the paws. But the dog should be used to this in the run -up to the hike.”
Ideal are a distance of well -signposted hiking trails. “Fortunately, we have a lot of it in Germany,” says Rule. “Whether in the Bavarian Forest, in the Harz, in Saxon Switzerland or in the Allgäu: we find dog -friendly routes and varied nature everywhere.” Dog owners should find out in advance whether the chosen hiking trail is located in a national park or nature reserve. There is often a leash obligation here.
The expert also recommends the expert for difficult terrain: “This also makes it safer for the dog. In addition, you should lead your dog on the short leash if there is contact with cows, because a pasture has to be crossed. Then it is best to keep a lot of distance and lead the dog on the cow -facing side. But it is always better if you can stay on the way and bypass the pasture.”
The right accommodation
In addition to the route, the accommodation also needs to be chosen carefully. Not all mountain huts or pensions are welcome in their rooms. This can be quickly clarified in advance on the website or by request. It is best to search for dog -friendly accommodations and also adapt the packing list to the needs of the four -legged friend: “It is helpful if you pack your blanket for the overnight stays,” advises rule. “This immediately gives him trust: here is his place. Especially when many people or other dogs are on site, it is difficult for some four -legged friends to relax.” If the route allows it, alternatively an overnight stay in the tent is ideal.
Packing list for humans and dogs
In addition to your own equipment, a small dog package in the backpack is advisable. These include:
- Sufficient water and a (foldable) Bowl.
- Food and snacks.
- First aid set for dogs, including tick pliers, prophylaxis against parasites, muzzle and bandage material.
- Optional: dog assers, for example at the German Alpine Association, if the dog has to be recovered.
- Pfot care, such as petroleum jelly and protective dog shoes (preventive or in the event of injury).
- Dog brand with telephone number or Tasso badge; Optional GPS tracker if the dog outptions.
- Long and short leash, dishes, optionally a leash with a stipper for hanging in the belt.
- Dog drop bag.
“In the meantime, there are even small hundred bags that look a little like saddlebags for a bike,” explains the author. “If such a backpack sits well, the dog is used to it and the weight is evenly distributed, the four -legged friend can wear part of his equipment himself.”
Common nature experience
Hikes with dogs promote the bond and offer beautiful nature experiences. However, this only works if you take into account other hikers, animals and nature. Central to a relaxed success is that you and the dog are well prepared and keep an eye on the physical limits on the go.
